New or pre-loved: which should you buy?

We sell both, so we have no particular axe to grind here. What we do have is a fairly clear sense of which customers end up happy with which, and it is less about budget than people assume.

What “pre-loved” means when we say it

The phrase gets used loosely in this industry, so it is worth being specific. A pre-loved spa here is one our own engineers have stripped down, inspected, deep-cleaned and serviced before it goes on sale. Pumps, heaters, controls and jets are tested. Anything worn is replaced. The shell is cleaned properly rather than wiped over.

That is a different proposition from a spa bought privately, which is sold as it stands with no inspection and no comeback. There is nothing wrong with a private sale if you know what you are looking at and you are prepared to take the risk. Most people are not, and the cost of a failed pump or a leaking heater tends to swallow whatever was saved.

Where the real differences are

**Warranty.** New spas come with a year of electrical cover. Pre-loved comes with ninety days. That gap is the single biggest practical difference, and it is the one to weigh most carefully — extended and lifetime cover is available on top if you want to close it.

**Choice and specification.** New means you pick the model, the shell colour, the cabinet, the seating layout, the jet count. Pre-loved means choosing from what has come through the workshop, which changes constantly. If you have your heart set on a particular configuration, new is the more predictable route.

**Condition.** A serviced pre-loved spa should work like a new one. What it will not always have is a flawless cabinet or an unmarked cover. These are cosmetic, they do not affect how it performs, and they are a large part of why the price is what it is.

Who each one suits

Pre-loved suits the person who wants to get into a hot tub sooner rather than later, is relaxed about the exact model, and would rather put the difference towards the base, the electrics or a good cover. It also suits anyone unsure whether they will use a spa enough to justify a new one — and in our experience they almost always do.

New suits the person who wants a specific layout, wants the longer warranty, or is planning the spa into a wider garden project where everything else is new too. It also suits anyone intending to keep it for a long time, where the warranty and the untouched starting condition matter more.

A note on the deposit

Pre-loved stock moves quickly, and the spa you looked at on Tuesday may well be gone by Friday. Any pre-loved hot tub can be held with a ninety-nine pound deposit, with the balance due forty-eight hours before delivery. That is there so you are not forced into deciding on the spot.

The advice we actually give

Come and sit in them. Not metaphorically — actually get in, dry, in the showroom, and try the seats. Seat depth and lounger length vary enormously between models, and a spa that reads perfectly on paper can be wrong for your height in a way no specification sheet will tell you. It is by appointment so you are not queuing, and it is the single most useful hour you can spend before deciding anything.
